I started reading The Singularity Is Nearer today, the latest book by futurist Ray Kurzweil.
Before I even made it through the first sentence, I had to stop and look up the very first word:
“Vicissitude.”
It’s not exactly a word you hear in everyday conversation.
According to the dictionary, it means the ups and downs, twists and turns, and changing fortunes of life.
As soon as I read the definition, it hit a little too close to home.
Considering my current situation, I felt personally attacked by the first word of the book.
Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges at us. Plans change. Careers change. Finances change. Family situations change. Some seasons feel stable and predictable, while others feel like you’re navigating a storm without a map.
Maybe that’s why the word stood out to me.
We often imagine the future as a straight line leading toward some destination, but real life rarely works that way. Progress usually comes through a series of vicissitudes—successes, setbacks, surprises, and opportunities we never saw coming.
From what I’ve read so far, The Singularity Is Nearer explores how technology and artificial intelligence may transform the future in ways most of us can’t imagine today. Whether you’re optimistic, skeptical, or somewhere in between, it’s certainly a fascinating topic.
And if the first word is any indication, the book may have more wisdom to offer than I expected.
